SCHOOL GROUPS
The Bastogne War Museum offers high-quality educational activities for pupils aged 6 to 18. Often guided by former teachers, these animations are based on historically accurate content that has been validated by historians. Through interactive methods tailored to each age group (workshops, digital resources, teaching packs, games, debates, etc.), they enable pupils to explore history, citizenship and an understanding of the world in a practical and engaging way.
Consequently, the Bastogne War Museum’s educational programme lends itself History teachers as well as Citizenship, Geography, French or Philosophy teachers.

a visit with émile

This program allows students to learn about Émile’s life, as well as that of civilians and soldiers during World War II. Guided by a program leader, they explore authentic firsthand accounts, sensory workshops, and multimedia exhibits to gain a better understanding of this historical period. By handling objects and engaging in discussions, they compare daily life back then with life today.
Extend the experience with the "Allies Game":
The animation “A Visit with Emile” can be extended in the afternoon with an outdoor cooperative game, the Allies Game. This scavenger hunt provides a fun way to reinforce the concepts learned during the tour and to explore the Mardasson Memorial.

ROads of exile

Through the history of World War II, the harsh reality of survival in exile is vividly illustrated through firsthand accounts and artifacts from the period. This exhibition focuses on the migration of populations persecuted by the Nazi totalitarian regime beginning in 1933 and on the mass exoduses caused by the fighting. Its journey through the Bastogne War Museum naturally leads visitors to reflect on contemporary migration.
Extend the experience:
The animation Roads of Exile can be extended with a visit to the iconic battle sites around Bastogne. You’ll start by exploring the Bois de la Paix, where 4,000 trees were planted to honor the veterans of the conflict. Next, you’ll explore the remains of the Bois Jacques battlefield using an augmented reality mobile app. Thanks to this technology, you’ll experience the lives of the Easy Company soldiers holed up in their foxholes. Finally, you'll end with a stop at the German military cemetery in Recogne.

The Bastogne War Museum offers an immersive role-play activity.
Students explore the social and legal issues of the time. In the morning, guided by a facilitator, they prepare to take on the role of a character, based on testimonies, artefacts and the museum’s exhibits, in order to understand the diversity of human reactions in the face of extreme situations.
In the afternoon, the group takes part in a trial in a reconstructed courtroom. Armed with a character profile and the knowledge gained during the visit, the pupils build their case, debate, deliberate and justify their decisions. Inspired by real events, the final verdict depends on the quality of the discussions and the choices made by the various protagonists.
discovering human rights

After briefly reviewing the history of human rights, your class—divided into groups—begins its tour of the Bastogne War Museum.
During this activity, your students will be provided with a worksheet that outlines the main articles of the Declaration of Human Rights and explores the impact of World War II. This document helps students identify how fundamental rights were violated at various points during the conflict. This activity helps your group understand the extent to which humans have demonstrated resilience and adaptability—or, conversely, how they have repeated the mistakes of the past.

The Bastogne War Museum offers an immersive audio-guided tour in which students explore World War II through the eyes of four characters. Enhanced by three interactive multimedia displays, the tour traces the causes, course, and consequences of the conflict, with a particular focus on the Battle of the Ardennes, which left a lasting mark on the Bastogne region during the winter of 1944–1945.
Students also have access to the Generations45, Bois Jacques Battlefield, and Bastogne War Rooms experiences.
MEAL
The Bastogne War Museum includes the Bistrot de la Paix, open during the museum opening hours. The Bistrot de la Paix is a charming replica of a 1950s estaminet, accommodating up to 140 guests.
With era-specific music playing in the background, this cozy café captures the post-war atmosphere relaxed and joyful after the end of a five-year conflict.
